DC24: Renewable energy integration, modern power systems.
Andrew is a doctoral researcher and MSCA Fellow in DREAM+PLAN, Employed at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain & Co-enrolled at RMIT University in a Double Degree Position.

Andrew's Story
Andrew Roberts is a DREAM+PLAN Doctoral Candidate at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya
and RMIT University, researching renewable energy integration in modern power systems. His work
focuses on developing approaches to grid stability in power systems with high renewable penetration
through the design and evaluation of load-side controllers and aggregated-load models capable of
delivering voltage support, frequency support, fault ride-through, and black-start services.
He holds a Master of Engineering (Electrical Engineering) and a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical
Engineering) (Honours), both from RMIT University graduating with Distinction in 2024 and 2019,
respectively. He is a Professional Member of Engineers Australia (MIEAust), listed on the National
Engineering Register (NER), and a Member of IEEE (MIEEE).
Academic contributions include a master’s thesis titled Frequency Control using Dynamic Demand
Response Integrated with Energy Storage System, and a peer-reviewed AUPEC 2024 conference
paper titled Frequency Control using Dynamic Demand Response and Grid-Scale Battery Energy
Storage Systems: An Australian Case Study.
Industry experience includes work in grid operations as a Congestion & Grid Modelling Engineer at
the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). Broader expertise spans process development,
automation, power system modelling and analysis, data analysis, and the management of network
congestion and limitations.
Motivated by sustainability, efficiency, and collaborative problem-solving, Andrew’s current research
focuses on engineering solutions to the complex challenges grid operators face as inverter-based
resources become more dominant in modern power systems. The goal is to develop control strategies
and coordination frameworks to enable demand-side resources to contribute to system services,
improve system security, reduce curtailment, and accelerate the integration of renewables at scale.

Andrew is excited to be part of the DREAM+PLAN community, attending events and collaborating with researchers across Europe and Australia. This is a unique opportunity to innovate in his field while contributing to the program’s wider mission of building a sustainable and inclusive energy future. Living in Barcelona, Andrew is also keen to immerse himself in Catalan and Spanish history and culture as he integrates into
the community.
