DC21: Enhancing Sustainability of Critical and Strategic Raw Materials Production for the Energy Transition by Promotion of Greening Technologies.
Marta is a doctoral researcher and MSCA Fellow in DREAM+PLAN, Employed at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain & Co-enrolled at RMIT University in a Double Degree Position.

Marta's Story
Marta Di Stasi is from Agropoli, a small town on the southern coast of Italy. She began her studies in Naples, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II. Those years were also marked by the Covid period, which made Marta appreciate even more, later in my master’s degree at the Polytechnic of Turin, the value of teamwork and collaboration. One of the highlights of Marta's master’s was joining the Polito Sailing Team, where she experienced first-hand how different skills and ideas can come together toward a common goal.
Marta also had the chance to explore different contexts abroad. She spent a study period at Iowa State University, in the heart of the Midwest, which gave her a new perspective both academically and culturally. Later, she carried out her master’s thesis at NOVA University in Lisbon, where she worked on the production of biochar and activated carbon from microalgae for the removal of pollutants such as neodymium and venlafaxine from water. After graduating, Marta also had the opportunity to do an internship at Saipem in the CCUS Solution Management team, where she got closer to the industrial side of carbon capture technologies.
Now, as she begins her PhD, Marta is excited to work on one of the paradoxes of our time: green technologies need raw materials, but obtaining them is far from green.

Marta wants to help close that gap by developing cleaner alternatives for the energy transition!
What excites Marta the most about DREAM+PLAN is the chance to work in an international and truly multidisciplinary environment, where research is directly connected to real-world needs. The DREAM+PLAN program brings together people from different fields and cultures, which Marta finds inspiring to collaborate across continents to address complex challenges, and to turn that collaboration into solutions that can make a difference.
