DC20: Mining of Raw Materials from Sea Water and Industrial Brines as an Approach based on the Blue Economy to Promote Process Industries Decarbonization .
Pietro is a doctoral researcher and MSCA Fellow in DREAM+PLAN, Employed at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain & Co-enrolled at RMIT University in a Double Degree Position.

Pietro's Story
Pietro is a chemist with a strong interest in sustainability, materials science, and environmental impact. After completing his Master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Bologna, he joined Fusion for Energy (F4E) in the Materials Manufacturing and Metrology Unit. There, he contributed to simulation work related to the manufacturing of fusion reactor components, gaining hands-on experience in collaborative international research.
Although Pietro's academic background is rooted in pure chemistry, with a focus on analytical methodologies and materials characterization, he has developed a growing curiosity toward industrial processes, green energy, and resource recovery.

For Pietro, the DREAM+PLAN program is a unique opportunity to explore these interests in depth while building a truly international academic experience through the joint PhD between UPC and RMIT. His research will focus on extracting critical raw materials and producing green hydrogen from sea water brines using membrane and electrochemical technologies.

Through this project, Pietro's aim is to contribute to cleaner and more resilient industrial processes, while improving his skills as a researcher and project developer. He is especially motivated by the idea that research can have real, tangible impact on both people and the planet.
